  3. A differential is a
  4. set of gears that
  5. distributes the
  6. torque from the
  7. drive shaft to the
  8. two drive axles. 
  9.  
  10. A differential is
  11. needed to allow for
  12. the difference in
  13. speed of the inside
  14. and outside wheels
  15. when a car is
  16. turning.  If there
  17. was no
  18. differential, the
  19. wear on tires would
  20. be much greater,
  21. and the amount of
  22. force needed to
  23. turn the steering
  24. wheel would also be
  25. greater.
